Dr. Umar Qasim has been an Associate Professor of Computer Science at the University of Engineering and Technology Lahore since 2019. Prior to that, Umar studied and worked for twenty(20) years at various well-reputed institutions in North America.
Umar holds a Bachelor of Computer Science (Honours) andan MBA in Management Information Systems from Hamdard University, and an MS and a PhD in Information Systems from the New Jersey Institute of Technology. He has been in the IT field for over 15 years and has taught IT courses at various post-secondary institutions across North America. In his academic career, Umar has taught courses in the area of Computer Science, Information Technology, and Business/Management Information Systems.
Umar’s research and teaching interests span across various areas of Information Technology including databases, digital preservation, information retrieval, information filtering, text mining, optimization techniques, enterprise search and data warehousing. His current research is focused on addressing the challenges stemming from the high volume, velocity, and variety of digital information. Research questions include how to capture, curate, store, search, share, communicate, analyze and visualize digital information.
Umar has an extensive hands-on as well as teaching experience in the field of information technology. Currently working as the Digital Preservation Officer, Umar is responsible for the University of Alberta Libraries’ digital preservation program, including internal operations and external preservation partnerships. He maintains and shares expertise on digital preservation with the University of Alberta Libraries, the University community, and the professional community of practice at large. He is an active participant within the professional community. Umar has served as a track chair in a number of international conferences, as well as a reviewer/PC member for numerous well known journals, conferences, and workshops. He has also lead and served on committees for national and international collaborative initiatives.
